Where You Put Your Grips

Need a new set of bars and pretty much everything is blurring together? Start with the rise of the handlebars, which is the imaginary line drawn straight down from the center of your bar end, to the center of your stem. Now what does a taller bar really do for you? A taller bar will increase your leverage and power over your bike however if the bar is too big it will not have the same effect. Also think about the stem that you have on your bike. A front load stem will generally drop your bars while a top load will raise them slightly. A taller bar will also give you the option of taking a few spacers out from under your stem if you prefer the no spacers look. The next measuremnet you want to look at is up sweep. Up sweep is bascially the radius that the handlebars are bent at. Meaning how much of the grip area goes up from where the handlebar is bent. If you want your bars to feel a little taller then they are go for more up sweep. I myself prefer one degree of up sweep because anymore then that hurts my wrist. Back sweep is how much the grip area bends back toward the rider. I have found that this measurement is all preference depending on rider and style so basically you have to try a few bars for yourself. The measurement that means the least to me is width cause if you buy a super wide bar and you don't like it just break out the hacksaw and cut them down. Before you go crazy with that saw in your hands remember most bars can only be cut an inch or two on both sides due to the butting process which means if you cut to much some bar ends might not fit. Heat treated and butted bars soak the market so construction of bars is fairly the same but if you have a problem bending bars go for a bar that weighs a little more and is backed by a warranty to ensure it holds up to your burliness.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 1:02pm
How long have you been riding?

Reed Stark March 8 at 1:03pm
Ever since I was 9, so 8 years.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 1:09pm
How has your style Changed from then and now?

Reed Stark March 8 at 1:17pm
I always used to run two pegs with brakes and ride skateparks all day. I got bored of the same skateparks and started riding more street. I broke my brake cable at some point and thought I'd try brakeless. I thought it was fun to try and manage my speed without the aid of brakes. Also you never had to worry about your brakes being shitty if your wheel moved, which is sweet. I started riding four pegs because I got bored and thought it would be fun to learn tricks opposite. Now I still ride parks and trails every once in a while, but I mostly ride street.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 2:29pm
Who got you into riding? What was the first crew you rolled around with and who do you roll around with now?

Reed Stark March 8 at 7:42pm
My brother and I used to rollerblade when we were really young. He quit that, started riding, and around a year later I got a bike also. The first crew I rode with was my brother Kyle and our neighbor Kevin Delaney. We built a quarterpipe in my front yard and we always rode it after school. Nowadays I ride mostly with Kyle, Matt Thompson, Seth Peterson and Cody Smiglewski.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 10:36pm
What kind of car are you rollin' in?

Reed Stark March 8 at 10:37pm
honda crv!

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 10:37pm
What else are you into besides BMX?

Reed Stark March 8 at 10:42pm
I bowl, party, golf, and play basketball and baseball. For money I umpire little league baseball games which fucking rules!

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 10:51pm
Do you smoke weed?

Reed Stark March 8 at 10:52pm
I tried it once, I felt funny.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 10:53pm
I know you travel a little bit, but how much do you travel?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:03pm
I generally take one trip a year to somewhere far away and a few little weekend road trips to border states. I really enjoy seeing new places and riding new spots. It always keeps life interesting.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:04pm
What are some of your favorite tricks to do?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:07pm
flip double whips, quadruple tailwhips, 1080's and barspins.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:07pm
Have you invented any tricks?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:10pm
I think I might be one of the only people to ever do a 360 half barspin to fakie on a bank. hahaha

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:11pm
HAHA! I've never seen that before. What PSI do you run in your tires?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:13pm
Strictly 69 PSI. It's a smooth ride for sure.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:15pm
Send me some photos.

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:17pm

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:20pm
Where's one place you'd like to go ride that you haven't ridden yet?... and you know that you'll go there for sure.

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:21pm

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:23pm
the first 3 are by Ben Austin. I dont know who took the crooked photo. Sorry for the lack of street photos, I usually just film shit! haha

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:25pm
I've always wanted to ride New York City, but never have. I'm pretty sure I'll make it there eventually.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:28pm
When are you coming to Texas again?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:32pm
Friday!

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:33pm
My nigga. Will you be signing autographs anywhere?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:35pm
If by signing autographs you mean drawing dicks on people passed out, then yes. I'll be signing those autographs pretty much everywhere.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:36pm
How many stairs can you 360?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:38pm
Well how big are the stairs?

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:39pm
Normal stair size...

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:41pm
I guess I've never really maxed it out. Maybe 20? I feel like my legs would blow out if it was bigger than that.

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:41pm
That's what she said.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:42pm
Do you holler at bitches?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:45pm
Soooooo many bitches.

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:48pm
Got any set plans for your life?

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:49pm
My set plan for my life is to not have a set plan in my life.

Reed Stark March 8 at 11:50pm
*goin to bed, continue answering tomorrow!*

Tazz Hernandez March 8 at 11:51pm
Okay. Goodnight cutie.

Reed Stark March 9 at 8:10pm
ready to rock

Tazz Hernandez March 9 at 11:06pm
If you could go anywhere with 5 people, where would you go and who would you take?

Reed Stark March 10 at 1:07pm
I would probably bring Kyle Stark, Seth Peterson, Riley McMaster, Ryan Guggenberger, and Florian Stecker. We would take a road trip from Minnesota to New York to party with the BMXFU guys, cruise down the coast to Texas to chill with the SOLIDSTEEL guys, drive from there all the way up to Vancouver to drop off Riley, and then make it back home to Minnesota. That trip would be the jam!

Tazz Hernandez March 11 at 12:06pm
Make it happen. Any Stark video parts coming out any time soon?

Reed Stark March 11 at 5:28pm
Kyle has recently been just making web videos, but he plans on putting out Team Dilly's third full length dvd "Team Dilly is the Man" haha. I've been filming a bunch for that and also I'll probably have a few clips or a split section in the double disc dvd package including "Fully Cocked" by Clint Zabodyn and "Rock Hard" by Chris Kowaleski. Shit should be good!

Tazz Hernandez March 11 at 5:29pm

Tazz Hernandez March 11 at 6:51pm
Holy shit that's me. How often do you get to ride your bike?

Reed Stark March 12 at 1:28am
ahha yep! During the summer i can ride every day,

Reed Stark March 12 at 1:28am
during winter I usually ride once or twice a week at indoor parks. Snow is a serious bummer.

Tazz Hernandez March 12 at 5:21pm
How do you like your local indoor parks?

Reed Stark March 13 at 6:39pm
I usually go to 3rd lair. It's a pretty fun park but the owner and a lot of the people who work there are fucking douche bags. I wish I could support a different skatepark, but there aren't too many around.

Tazz Hernandez March 13 at 7:53pm
Move to Texas.

Reed Stark March 14 at 11:18pm
haha fuckin right! gonna check out UT pretty soon and see how that is. might go there.

Tazz Hernandez March 15 at 12:18am

Reed Stark March 20 at 4:09pm

Reed Stark March 20 at 7:17pm

East Hollywood Art Cycle.

Oh yeah, aside from Bmx-stunting, I also zipped the 20" down to the East Hollywood Art Cycle on Saturday evening, just a couple of blocks from the pad.

The East Hollywood Art Cycle is a street fair about, well, Art and Cycles. Go figure?

I heard a cool 2piece band, called Whales (Whqles). They had a fun sound, and it's always fun to see bands play in the middle of Santa Monica Blvd, which is useually just packed with cars. Stupid cars.

(camera phone snap of Whqles)

I also ran in to the good buddy, Hernan. Hernan is a sweet bmx'er and fixy street racer, who's most recent edit caused a bit of stir on thecomeup, and various other bmx interweb chat rooms.

Too busy riding...

Me too... busy riding :)

The weather was seriously kick ass in LA this weekend. I did a photo shoot at the trails and Staples Center Saturday. The Staples Center shoot was interesting. It went a little something like this: Getting ready to do a trick, cops come walking by sketching on us, cops leave, Camera man lays down on the ground to shoot the flick, I do my trick, Camera man stands up, cops come back, we walk away. Cops are dumb.

And on Sunday, I decided to leave the car home and pedal to the trails. It's about 10 miles but mostly through Griffith Park, so it was a very enjoyable commute. Got to the trails an hour or so before anybody else, did some maintenance to the roll in, fixed some landings, had a PBR, kicked it in the shade and waited for the session.

Here is a flick... of me... being to busy to blog...

Erik E,

Someone else post. I'm busy... Riding.

Nudnik's Trip to Ray's

"About a month ago, I took a roadtrip to Cleveland, OH with 2 friends to go ride a bike riders paradise. It involved 40 hours of driving for 20 hours of riding but it was totally worth it. Travis, Clayton and I had a blast at Ray's and are already making plans to go this summer if possible.

This is only my second ever video that I've been truly stoked on the outcome. I admit it's a little long for the average viewer but since I made this video for nobody but myself, I think it's perfect. The entire process had quite a few ups and downs but all in all, it was a great way to spend an ENTIRE Sunday.

I look forward to my next roadtrip and my next video documenting it all. Watch the video and let me know what you think. Be aware, there is some "foul" language."

Ryan Dickerson's Scooter Stolen

Ryan's scooter was stolen the other night in Garland. Everyone keep an eye out for it. Follow that bitch and find out where he lives... so we can kill him.

Did You Get That?

Aldo sent me this email...

"Hey man, i got a hold of a camera like a month ago and i can't seem to put it down. So a bunch of us decided to film like a 20 to 30 minute DVD of our dumb antics with some serious riding also. I don't care to make profit off it so I'm just gonna give a copy to anyone who wants one. It's coming together good so far, and we've been riding/filming with a bunch of garland locals."

Spring Time Means...

More Sun!!!

At 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, we set our clocks forward one hour ahead of standard time ("spring forward").

I can't wait.

Larry Clack Getting Flow From Standard

Nigga's hooked up. =)

Standard

Dropout and get baked!!!

OK so hopefully you learned something from my last post about forks and you've just been waiting patiently for me to finish this thing out. Dropouts are fairly simple in regards to construction it is a simple plate that is laser cut out of a 4130 plate of chromoly and is welded onto the fork leg. Now depending on how you ride, dropout shape and thickness are the two main areas of concern. Street riders should opt for a dropout that is big enough that it will either sit flush with the peg or maybe hang just below to aid in protecting the hub. You will also find a dropout that is a little thicker will keep your dropouts nice and straight given the occasional missed grind. Dropouts that are super thin and have holes cut in them next to the weld should be avoided at all cost due to the fact that it creates an area of high stress when matched with pegs. The investment cast dropouts that are on We The People and Fly forks are made in a different process then laser cutting. Instead the dropout is molded with a section of the fork leg to make the dropout and the bottom of the fork leg one piece decreasing the chance of having a broken dropout. After all things on the fork have been welded it is time for the fork to be heat treated. Heat treating is a process that is usually done to tubing before welding but some companies have stepped things up with a post weld heat treatment. This post weld heat treating is designed to make the fork stronger by reducing the number of brittle areas around the weld. After the heat treating process has been completed the fork will now perform as one piece as opposed to tubes joined together. The only difference between each companies heat treating is the temperature at which they bake the forks at. Industry secret for you kids is that the optimum temperature for baking chromoly is anywhere between 500F to 800F thought I'd share that with you. Anything you want to know email me at QTBMX23@GMAIL.COM and I'll give you an answer.
